Here in the UK there are a whole number of National, county and even town/city poet laureates. As someone who admires them greatly, and would love to become a laureate someday, how important are they to you, and if not... what could they do to BE more relevant and respected in your eyes?

I am aware of 2 recent Poet Laureates in NSW Australia Sydney area. One was appointed by sydney city council in 2012 for 1 year on $50,000 but i don't think there was a second one. This year Parramatta council has appointed a person on $50,000. I can't remember the full wording but it involved 'literature and culture' . The politics of literature and culture in modern Australia is really ugly, she'll earn her 50,000
