I'm simply asking because back in my high school days,I also compare poetry to music.
I base my poems off music I listen too, which is why I get confused when someone ask me which poet inspire me.Well none, since,I wrote poems base on experiences.
Poetry influenced way I live base on expression.People have told me the way I speak is like a poet, which is why I talk the way I do.I also believe poetry influence uniqueness.Alot of people told me how unique I am and poetry does play a huge reason why I am that I am.Which is why I enjoy coming here,as there are poets that do understand this literary art.
Culture is social media.I like to think food services, retail and social media reflect society. While its awesome someone like Rupi Kaur and Gabbie Hannah can make monetize poetry in such insane level,do fear that upcoming poets will look and say,THIS IS GOLD STANDARD!!!!!!Poetry may have influence politics. As much as I don't like talking about politics,my hypothesis is that politics have raise more voices to speak out.
Encouraging,to say the least.
In conclusion, poetry has been more of an influence than I thought.Back in 2017,I was on a huge high on "Profit from Passion".And I thought that theres no way poetry can make me financial free.Mainly in terms of poetry being only source of income,I would like to say I'm partially right. However,I was wrong in thinking poetry didn't have influence since if we didn't,we wouldn't have Emily Dickenson,Robert Frost,Shakespeare,Allan Edgar Poe,Allen Ginsberg, and list goes on.
So,how has poetry influence way you live and how has it influence culture?
Great thread Bendy! And a very insightful reply as always @Ken Merchant
Poetry changed my life. I’ve never felt more secure as a person. know I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing! It’s a great feeling! Acting was fun while it lasted but I always had imposter syndrome holding me back.
I can certainly testify to your introduction to poetry. When I started out writing poetry for the first time I based everything I wrote off from life experiences. Everything I saw, heard, felt, or touched. Written into scrabbled words upon a notebook. I've always seen poetry as a mode of therapy and journaling. As time progressed, I began to see how it influenced people, and how as an art form, it held more than just simple words. I think art appreciation plays a huge role in my life. I can't count how many times a lyric hits me just right, or something I've written has pulled me out of some kind of rut.
I'll admit though. Individuals like Rupi Kaur and Gabbie Hannah certainly differ in my personal opinions of poetry. However, I will say they have created their own niches. Which is fine. I choose not to be part of it though. I can relate to Rupi more than I can Gabbie by a long shot. At least Rupi is respectable in a sense. Pardon me for saying, but I feel like Gabbie is a huge troll in the world of poetry. Taking a dump on the sanctity that is poetry whenever she feels a tirade coming on. I'm sure some youthful angst is present in her, but the foul language and imagery she uses is purely disrespectful. Rupi on the other hand utilizes the more positive aspect of poetry in her writing. Speaking from emotion and life experience as an oppressed woman. Her work is purely cultural and I can respect that. Though I don't enjoy her writing style in the slightest, I can appreciate the content. Big names such as these have a huge responsibility tied to them. Some just show appreciation better than others. What really separates politics for me is this one thing. We control who we allow within our life, and who we allow in will, in some ways, influence who we become. Kind of the same rule as "you are what you eat." Not the best comparison I'm sure, but you get the point.
I find my life revolves around poetry entirely. Life in itself is very poetic, so it is hard not to feel that way. Even if it isn't expressed through words.
