Is everything you write autobiographical, or do you use characters as well? do you enjoy the distance it creates, or does it feel less personal? Sometime I write stuff, and people ask if ”I’m ok” - which is unique to this medium in my experience, and lovely of course. I do it to people as well! But what you have read may not be about me. My last submission I shared “Anx.” For example (Still up if you want to look and say nice things about it) And that raises questions of authenticity I guess with some of you. I‘d really like to know your thoughts. Thanks for any response and taking the time to read my question.

Great title for this post, Rich :P
I'd say half my poems are spoken in my voice, the other half are either the voices of characters I am exploring (sometimes real people from history I am intrigued by), or the poems are just situational and there is no real personalised 'speaker' with a significant presence in the poem. So I guess that voice might still be mine...?
I think poetry is one of the best artistic avenues where you can be confessional, honest and celebratory, and that is why so many writers implant their own voices into their poems, thus, telling their life story. But it is equally just as liberating, fulfilling and enjoyable to assume another character and tell their story through your own words; I guess it's another way of living out a fantasy and allowing the mind to wonder limitlessly.
Not everything I write is autobiographical,I like to invent stuff although much of what I write is observational. I do have one character that I like to use in some of my poems, I just refer to her as 'she' but she's not a real person, however the narrator / speaker is usually myself.
