I just finished writing a poetry discussion post about names in poetry. But let's talk about our own names.
I don't know about other countries but in England, I can pay, fill out a bunch of paperwork, and change my name to Princess Tree Oreo if I wanted to. Think Phoebe from that episode of Friends when she's supposed to change her name after she's married.
So, yes, it's possible that I can change my name. So I suppose my real question is: if you were going to change your name, what would you change it to?
I'm happy as Rachel. I feel like it's me. I enjoy being called Rach or Rae. It all feels like me. However, in my A Level Philosophy class, there were four Rachels which I think is a bit much. I don't have a specific name in mind that I would choose. I always loved the name Rosie when I was little but I don't think that's me. I've been very drawn to the name Nova recently (it means 'new' apparently and I feel like that's fitting) and Leia (because Princess Leia is just goals). Maybe Nova Leia.
I'm rambling again. But what would you change your name to?
@Adam Gary
Figure this would be more accurate!!!!!!
Rachel,no,I wouldn't change my first name.I'm considering changing my last name, since its a common Vietnamese name.Unsure to what, although am considering it.I'm playing with last name,Cage, since I think it would be cool.Coming out of entrance name and hearing my name "BENDY CAGGGEEE"
Yes,I watch too much pro wrestling lolol, aware its not everyone cup of tea.
In any case, think this answers question.
I don’t know if I would change my name. Growing up I didn’t like it…but we learn to accept ourselves as we grow. It took until my 20s that I started asking people to use my full name when addressing me. When teachers or whoever would ask me “do you prefer Matthew or Matt,” my answer was “either.” But as I got older, “Matt” just didn’t feel…me. I’m not a Matt. It still gets used by folks and I don’t care enough about it enough to correct someone, so I just let it go. But I do prefer “Matthew,” for the simple fact that it is my name.
so…uh…to answer your question - no I wouldn’t change my name. I like Matthew. It’s comfortable, like a well worn pair of boots. :)
I have an interesting relationship with names because of my personal experience with disassociative identity disorder. After years of therapy, I am integrated but there was a time, " I" felt more like "we" and each part of the "we" system had a name. In some instances the part named itself, but I also gave names to them as a way to make sense of their role in keeping us/me safe.
As far as last names go: my maiden name is Wall (It's Irish) and now that it is hyphenated, it is Wall-O'Brien (even more Irish). So when I was just Wall, people often asked me how to spell my last name or they went ahead and spelled it Wahl Wohl or Walls
After a while, I automatically spelled it after saying it, because it was so hard for people to get it on the first try.
O'Brien has been even harder because many computers don't take the apostrophe so I end up with OBrien or Obrien. Also, many people call me Ms. OBreeeen. So, I end up spelling that one too. I thought I had an easy name, but evidently not.
One thing I will say is that I have never settled. I have always provided a correction if needed -of course in a friendly way. : )
I remember reading somewhere that changing our name is the most liberating thing we can do.
The arguement is that as we were "given" our names at birth by our parents, they have somehow imprinted all the connotations and associations that name has onto us. I suppose the idea is if you name something you own it. So according to this theory we are slaves from birth, until we emancipate ourselves from our moniker.
Would I change my name? I never really liked my surname, Brimble, sounds a bit clownish.
My first names are okay I guess, Marc Antony.
Although I did think about changing my first name once to Rey. In Spanish it means king.
But in the end would we ever really get used to our new ?
Hi Nova Leia
For the longest time I hated both my names. Adam, nope. Gary... Two first names... 😖
My whole life, even ON HERE! People get my name mixed up and call me Gary... and it just bugs me!
I would like to be called Phoenix. Or... Mr Ticklemepits!
Interesting though, that you say Rachel feels like you, or Rosie feels like you. I know what you mean, but isn't it funny how much association one puts on a word in regards to personalities!
Interesting
Look forward to seeing what others have to say on this. Awesome thread topic @Rachel Glass
