I have reason to believe we've got lots of pets here. They stay up late with us, inspire us, encourage us to socialise and go on walks with them, some even co-author academic papers (yes, that has happened)!. Share photos of your trusted companions, and some fun facts about them here.
Don't have a pet? No problem, tell us about your fictional pet dragon instead!
@Emma Toms just reminded me of this thread and thought I’d give an update on Harry. This is @Sophie holding him in January on her trip over here… he‘s even bigger now!
Sleepy, lazy, haughty Daisy...
So this is the little devil that has kept me away the last week! (That and The Early Hours)
A week at home now!
Oh darn, she's a cutie! I love her, and your ode to her! I bet she's amazing for hugs in the evenings! Give her a pet from me!
This is Peggy my 15 year old Bedlington Terrier. She's a real character and has been a real blessing in our lives. She's been stone deaf for 3 years so gets away with a lot now. As I've been home poorly for the last 18 months she been great company when Cath's in work.
I wrote this poem about her on her 15th birthday in April. loved seeing all your companions!
So cute. Sorry for everyone who's lost one. I know we'll be heartbroken when Peg leaves us. But she's very healthy at the moment, just slowing down. We're making the most of her.
Peggy Roo!
Puppy Peggy was bouncy
So carefree and flouncy
Fetching her ring from the heather
Whatever the weather
Running back and forth in the field
She barked and she squealed
Doing zoomies, she was slinky
So dodgy and jinky
Swimming fast like an otter
Nothing could stop her
Diving under the water
Fetching her ring, no-one taught her
Digging in every molehill
Running around every foothill
Growing dreadlocks like Marley
Her claws are so gnarly
She lies in the sunshine
Every summer and springtime
Rolling over and dancing
She does tricks for chicken
Spinning and rotating
Meirion taught her that one
Jumping on every stranger
No worries, no danger
White trousers she favours
Paw marks on their blazer
Pushing the ball with her nose
Like ping pong I suppose
Bonking it back with her big huge conk
Catching it, chucking it, chasing it, plonk
Sarah taught her this, her favourite game
Playing and snoozing and then playing again
She makes friends wherever she goes
She Peggifies everyone, everyone she knows
She has Pals in Yorkshire
and she has Butties in Wales,
She's has Bezzies in Liverpool,
They've all got tales
Of mischieves she made all over this land
Like Wombling all of Neil's rubbish,
Then shaking his hand
As she gets older she is slowing down
But she's so loving and funny
She still plays the clown
She loves to play in her bubble wrap den
She can't hear the pops, but she pops them and feels them!
She been deaf for three years but she still secure
We still talk to her, she reads lips I'm sure!
She won't go out in the rain
She hates when the snow
Sticks to her legs,
So she just won't go
Each day she has ten naps
And then sleeps again
She must be half hobbit
She's snoozing again!
She is fifteen now
But still looking fine
She can only eat fish and rice
But if I don't watch out, she eating mine
In Bedlington years she's eighty nine
No wonder she needs help to jump over the stile
I hope she stays healthy
For a good length of time
Cos' I love her my Peggy
She's just sublime 😍
Azalea and her beautiful baby girls (Anna Banana and Julie). Though they were all full-grown at the time, they would always be babies to us. : )
Azalea (Mom) and Anna Banana
This is my Anna Banana. She was the last of my rescues. When I lived in the country, I rescued every stray who came to my door. Anna's mother, Azalea found us. She had three kittens with her (Anna's older sisters) and she was pregnant with Anna and Anna's sister, Julie as well. We found homes for all of Azalea's babies and we kept Azalea, Anna, and Julie. We also kept, Burt, Pumpkin, and Sasha. They all lived to ripe old ages. Anna was our comedian, acrobat. She was pure joy and fun. She was my steady companion through COVID 19. She developed kidney disease over the spring and we had to let her go in June. It broke my heart, even though I was also filled with gratitude for the time we had. I am only just starting to accept the loss. For the first time, in 33 years, we do not have an animal friend in the house. I hope to find someone when the time is right.
I don’t have any living, breathing pets BUT I’d like to think these little guys are alive!
The left one is Harold and the right one is Wallace. I bought them from a friend who runs a small business with her poetry and making handmade pieces like these.
I think they’re cute!
I love Leo too.
Presenting you Leo! He's my friend's companion, but I guess I can call him mine as well, because we both raised him together. Well, four other people were involved 😁
We got him last year. When I used to write my poems for online poetry prompts or just to express myself, he would crawl onto my lap.
He's grown to be a bit temperamental but he is a sweet guy❤️ This is him admiring my Lion King art!
This is him now!
This is my darling Coco who was 15 when he passed away. He was just the sweetest doggie ever and we loved him so much. It is nearly 18 months since we said goodbye to him and we will never forget him.
We don't have any pets now but one hot night I heard something digging in the garden. An echidna had come to visit but unfortunately I was unable to get a photo. We live on a main road so I never expected to see an echidna here. My spiky visitor inspired some poetry.
So my dogs are my babies. They both turn 10 this year...it's going way too fast!
😀
You want to hear about my pets? 😂 Okay, but you asked for it...
My first two companions are my family's two dogs, Annie and Midnight. Midnight's nickname is Peanut Butter Boy or Peanut Butter Cups because he goes crazy over the empty peanut butter jars. Annie is like his older sister that wants to be his mom. She's also dainty, but she's ferocious when she is hunting small animals. Midnight is the carefree younger brother who still thinks that he's a pup. I've been training Midnight since he was a tiny puppy. Midnight usually helps me by keeping my feet warm while I'm writing late at night. ❤️ (Above is midnight being weird like usual.)
The next four companions are our cats, Caramel and her three kittens Toe Beans (AKA "Toby"), Nebula, and Poppy. Caramel has been living on our property since a few months before we moved in, but the babies were all born and raised here by us once Caramel became our domesticated farm cat. She and the babies stay outside, but the triplets have been picked up and cuddled and held since they were tiny, so it's almost like they're house cats. Poppy is the princess and the runt. Nebula is the sweet cinnamon roll. Toby, the tiger-striped, is technically mine, and I think he's the best.
The next seven of my writing buddies are Mabel, her daughter Bella, her other twin daughters Isabelle ("Izzy") and Annabelle ("Anna"), Bella's daughter Jingle Bell, Cupcake, and Tiffany. Here is a picture of Izzy when she was tiny, but now she's about twice that size! The goats are the ones who like to sit in trees with me when I write outside.
And the last of my companions are our chickens. There are 26 of them, but even though I know all of their names, I won't list them all here. What's important to know is that there are chickens who love to cuddle in the hammock with us, and even the rooster is docile (unlike most roosters who attack a human on first sighting). My few chickens that I picked out of the whole flock are Pipsqueak, Nutter Butter, and Macadamia.
And those are my and my family's animals! They all love helping me feel inspired with my poetry and my other writing projects and like to tag along on my excursions to find the perfect vocabulary.
Oscar likes to sleep UNDER pillows.
The snow in this picture stuck to his fur like velcro - that day was his FIRST experience ever with snow, his immediate reaction was to try to eat it! His favourite toy is a blue turtle/tortoise plushie - which is apt because it survived much longer than any other animal plushie. It's a little damaged right now, so it's temporarily sitting in my graveyard-of-other-toys-Oscar-completely-annihilated until I sew it back together.
May I introduce Buttercup and Trixie, two of my poetry pals. They hang out next to my desk and listen to me talk to myself while I try to figure out what the right word is.
Love this! This is my late companion! She used to sit under my desk all the time as I wrote!
