Lost Languages: Sinai's Most Held Secrets Are Cracking

So I read this article in Smithsonian Magazine and I'm actually dumbfounded that there are still religious sects purposefully withholding historically significant documents from humanity. I can only imagine how much has been lost (even beyond the burning of the Library of Alexandria).

I wonder what all your thoughts are on this? I for one am absolutely speechless.

mate I do n0t know where you got the idea that some sects are deliberately withholding texts from the world, from what I understand from the article is that monks erased old parchments in order to reuse hem as they had no new supplies, please correct me if I'm wrong. Interesting article though, thanks for sharing

Fascinating read. Considering there are 'Christian' variants of these languages, the dialects are either not as old as you would think they'd be (at most, they'd be around 2,000 years old), or, they would precede B.C.E.

What do you mean by "Christian variants," @Shen ? I'm struggling to make the connection there. Religion extends way beyond Christianity, in fact I believe Hinduism is actually the oldest of all organized religions, and then there are so many pagan offshoots throughout history. None of which used any one specific dialectic language. I mean the Sumerian language was first attested in around 3100 BCE. So who knows how old these dialects that these monk's have been withholding are.

It just fascinates me that there are still sects out there trying to hide information from the world that could potentially provide historically significant documentation.

They've made several references to languages spoken by Christians in the article, and I just used Christianity as a pinpoint in the timeline to determine how old these languages might be.

I also wouldn't put it past certain sects, religious groups and cults to withhold information from the wider public, lol. It also amazes me how some of the oldest civilisations in the world originated in the Middle East. I guess a lot of religious history in this part of the world was also preserved over the centuries, as well as obliterated.
