If I were to wear a tartan, I think I would choose the Cape Braton (area where I was born) or the Nova Scotia Tartan (province of birth)?
I found my book 'Selected Poems' edited by Kenneth Brown. Below are some info from this book
Scots is derived from northern most dialects of Anglo Saxon.. totally distinct from GaeliBurns grew up at a tree when Scots had been in steady decline for two centuries and had no dominant form. Burns takes advantage of both Scots and English pronunciations to make rhymes.
Burn's criticism of narrow and dogmatic religion should not be taken as a rejection of all religions... his kind of belief relied more on a philosophical conviction of the spiritual nature of mankind and the existence of a Supreme Being than on the teachings of revealed religion
I will put the notes on poetic structure in the thread Poetry discussions. Robbie Burns will influence future writers
This thread as got me in search across the net. It might be necessary to get a Burns statues to stand alongside Shakespeare on my desk methinks
I kind of missed Robbie Burns night. I thought we might get to our friends' son's pub, although that would be a five-hour drive. I grew up in Nova Scotia(latin: New Scotland), an area apparently attractive to Scottish immigrants. I heard, when I was young, that more people down home spoke Gaelic than in Scotland, Perhaps a romantic notion. My father spoke Gaelic but I learned only a few words, now lost. The point? The heritage was strong, but I don't recall a Robbie Burns night celebration. My father loved his poems and now that I think of it... well, we won't go there. As for the haggis, nuff said ... O Haggis, ye bind us ane an' aw,
At Burns' suppers, in grand banquet hall.
A symbol o' Scotland the Brave,
Yer tale be told through history's rave.
There is a great photo of the Robbie Burns statue in the domain sydney NSW Australia on Google maps. It is completion quality with a note may be subject to copywrite, so I didn't bother struggling to work out how to use it. I was there in spirit glad you guys had a good time
