I'm in the middle of writing up a manuscript of poetry. This manuscript is very much in the beginning stages and certainly a rough draft. I've been contemplating running a test group of beta readers to look over a digital version of this manuscript. However, I don't know if it is entirely necessary, nor do I have experience this sort of thing. I've created and held test groups before, but not for reading or publishing.
Does anyone have any advice or personal experience with beta reader groups?
I would be happy to read your book when it is ready for beta readers!
Hi Ken:
I would be happy to read whenever you are ready. : )
Hey Ken! Yes you can have other benefits as mentioned, you may even find some on here who know exactly the process of self publishing. One thing I will say though. Over recruit. Terrible English but I’ve just woken up. Get almost twice as many as you think you need because I guarantee you’ll have people agree to beta read and then ghost. With this, depending on your budget, you might look to pay at least one or two so you know you’ll get a considered and fully filled beta sheet back. Also I think setting a fair deadline is a must otherwise you’ll be stuck in limbo and could be waiting months for feedback.
Also the form you’re looking for is an NDA (non disclosure agreement) I picked mine up for free on the internet!
Hope this is of more help!
Hey Ken! They can be a priceless asset, I’m currently working on an online course about publishing and an important chapter of that is beta readers.
Beta readers can be the difference between hitting the nail on the head and hitting it on the side. I’ll say this, timing is everything. I don’t think it’s worth getting them in until you and you’re editor feel like there’s nothing more you can contribute to the collection. When you’re on your last draft, bring them in and see what the response is. Then you and your editor can discuss together from there!
