We require all applicants to submit written work, as well as a performance reading video for a place at the Academy. Please do not let this phase you. There are multiple class tiers for students of differing levels, and you are not expected to be the best performer in London. We are looking for students we feel we can offer real growth and training to.

 

All successful applicants will be entered onto a fresher's first term. This does not affect any level of studies, but is merely to help our professors understand you are still adjusting to life at the Academy. If you are a working professional, and would prefer to be considered as such, please state so in your form. We place those who we feel are already of a professional standard into our Professionals tier, where Craft classes are swapped out for Surgery classes and you will be given the opportunity to workshop your poetry instead. Please note: though you can make us aware of this preference your class tier will ultimately be down to the Academy faculty whom will in place you where they feel is best suited.

 

Payment for application fees is handled securely and can be paid through PayPal. You do not need to have a PayPal account in order to use the PayPal portal.

Requirements

Applicants do not need to have studied professionally / full-time or had any experience to apply for The Poetry Cove Academy.

All applicants are judged solely on their submission.

In order to attend The Poetry Cove Academy you must:

• Be fluent in the English language

• Be 16+ when commencing at the Academy

Submission Content

The submissions will be split into two parts:

Written Work

You will create a pdf document to upload below consisting of a 1 page cover letter telling us about yourself. Why you want to study at the academy, what your background is, and what you hope to achieve whilst you're with us. Please also provide 5 examples of your work, each on separate pages within the document.

​

Performance

You will create a video of you reading a piece of longform poetry with a minimum of three stanzas, and upload to your application below. This can be of your own work, or somebody else's. Make sure you state the poem and poet before you start your reading. Please do not let this phase you. You are not expected to give the performance of a life time. This is just to get an idea of where you're at and where we feel is best to place you if accepted into the academy.

You will be assessed on the following areas:

Written Work:

Versatility

How versatile you are in your forms and technique. 

​

Understanding

How well do you understand and implement technique into your work.

Your previous background, should you state any experience in your cover letter.

Performance:

Connection

How connected are you to what you are reading. What are the emotions running through the poem? Is that coming across in the reading?

​

Ownership

How have you used the poem as a stimulus? Have you internalised the text and made the words your own? Are you showing us your own unique quality as a performer?

​

Vocal clarity

Can we hear you and understand you? Is your voice expressive, and does it show the emotion you’re feeling?

Academy Tier Levels

Students are placed into their class tier by Academy faculty. They undergo assessment at the end of each term and may be moved tiers the following term.

 

Foundation
Intermediate
Professional

 

Application Results

At The Poetry Cove Academy, we endeavour to notify all applicants of their results status within 7 – 10 working days. Should you have any queries with regard to your application, please email contact@thepoetrycove.com, and a member of our applications team will get back to you shortly.

If you apply to our Academy and are not accepted, you can apply again after six months.

 

Student Status Disclaimer

Upon applying for, accepting and attending The Poetry Cove Academy students are doing so for the sole purpose of study. Students must understand that PCA is a separate entity and does not form part of the academy. As a student, you are not represented by or guaranteed representation by Poetry Cove Agency or any affiliated agencies or management.

Please note: Application fees for The Poetry Cove Academy are £30 and are non-refundable. Your application will be processed once we have received payment.
